Visitors from the northern tundra have invaded our area this week. Flocks of hundreds of Redpolls are being reported all across Western New York State. This is an irruption year for northern finches and birders in the area are enjoying a rare treat.

I have not seen redpolls this year but they are so darn cute and fun to watch. Maybe they all ended up in NY this year, but we have not had a really cold spell yet.

After I shot the photos in this series, more flocks showed up before it got dark.  There were well over 200 of them at my feeders at one time, and oh, they were very noisy!  It was a grey and snowy day just bursting with life!

Thanks James!  Keep an eye out for them, you have a good chance of seeing them this year.  Check with a local bird club, they'll know if they are in your area.

Amazing - I have a finch feeder but it does not seem to attract the finches....they like my other feeders. I have the niger seeds in it. I think I need to just dump it and put regular seeds in it as can be converted to a regular feeder by turning the feeder openings. I love your photo Congratulations on AC!
