I think this is a female Ruddy Duck.

She sure does look like a Ruddy Duck but it would be a very rare sighting on the Great Lakes.  Pretty sure it's a Scoter.  Thank you for looking!

It's definitely a female Ruddy Duck.... Not a Black Scoter, which is a sea duck and very rarely seen inland, except in the Great Lakes.... the tail, the streaked face, and beak, all give it away as a female Ruddy Duck. Here are some comparisons for you:

Hmmm....  Lisa, there were male Black Scoters on the lake that were too far out to get photos of but we were watching them with binoculars.  If she's a Ruddy then we had both species out there!  Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes and yes we do get Black Scoters most every winter. There were White-winged Scoters out there too.
