There was one lake in the park that had several of these large circular melted spots...hmmm.

I'm thinking methane.... ?

We get a fair amount of this where I live too, except the gas bubbles freeze inside the ice. Makes for an interesting overhead view!

That seems like a good explanation Katy. The spots were uniform and each one had a small frozen spot in the center. I could imagine methane bubbles causing them.
