That is a birch, and closely resembles the Heritage birches (a cultivar of river birches, Betula nigra) I have planted in my yard, which I have photographed and posted here before. A good part of their charm is the winter interest provided by the bark. Nice shot, Mary!

It's a paper bark birch. Most birches aren't that ragged.
