The pond was solid white this morning but as the day warmed it developed spiders. Eight legs even! :-)

Wow! This is so awesome. I wonder if there is bacterial activity associated with them, as described in this recent story:

Frost Flowers Blooming in the Arctic Ocean are Found to be Teeming with Life

Some bacteria have ice nucleating proteins while others have antifreeze proteins. I can imagine the spiders are congregations of bacteria with antifreeze properties (I can also imagine it's all plain old physics and inorganic chemistry too).

I hadn't thought of that. Good idea. My thought was there was a leaf or something floating there that was a good absorber of solar energy, and the warmer water was leaching along the surface melting ice at its thinnest points. But I'm not going out there to look :-)
