Caption: May have an injury. I think a type of finch but other thoughts are in the cardinal family. I just know that I have never seen one like this around here.

Great info Pam & Mark! I will keep this in mind. I have a cylinder feeder, a sock feeder & a non cylinder feeder (the tray that they stand on that fills with seeds)

Re: Pam's post on eye disease.
google house finch conjunctivitis It affects a few finches.

If anyone sees this condition and you are using cylinder type feeders where their heads/eyes can come in contact, remove and sterilize the feeders or eliminate them and go to open feeding.

I had a major problem here last year. I eliminated my cylinder feeder and all is well (so far).

Thanks Pam & Eileen. Yeah I was leaning toward the purple finch too when I posted the first shot. I was excited to see a different bird and didn't know those lived in this area. It looks like he might have been attacked by something (at the base of the left back side of the head). I hope to see him again a nice valentine surprise!

There is no such thing as a Purple House Finch. It's either a Purple Finch or a House Finch. Because you can see the tail in one of your images fairly clearly, I would say this is a Purple Finch, because of the shorter length and the larger notch in the tail.

I think it is a purple house finch. I saw a few this summer with eye problems. There is a eye disease finches are know to get. I normally see these birds I'n my hummingbird feeder. I hope this helps.
