That would be my guess. Much the same as our house finches in the west.

Hard to tell. Purple Finches definitely are a bit more wine-colored, and I find their head to be slightly larger than the House finch. Maybe the House finch has more speckle on the breast. I must keep a bird book here at my computer!

I have been checking the Cornell Bird Guide, and I don't think this is a purple finch. I can't tell because of the size and the lack of a back view. Could this be a summer tanager? http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Summer_Tanager/ id

It is a lovely picture, but I don't think it's a finch. I think that it's more likely something in the Cardinal family, and this seems the most likely. What do you think?

Yes, the overall raspberry coloring and the shorter tail with the big notch in it point toward this being a Purple Finch.

Thanks Mark, Mindi, Betsy, swreader, & Eileen. I think the cornell bird guide also said there is more of a top notch for the purple finch. I thought the words about "dipped in raspberry sauce" was also neat. I think the house finch has more brown feathers too.

As far as the red look I guess the editing made the bird appear more red. You can compare the pics background color with the first upload being more yellow. I uploaded unedited photos for a better look at the color.
I hope he sticks around for a better photo op.
Thanks again all!
