The sky had just a bit of hazy, faint glow all evening as we were driving home, then suddenly the energy seemed to 'gather itself' into dynamic and colorful bands, whirling and snaking across the entire sky.

We haven't had aurora like this all winter. (I couldn't be HAPPIER about the new lens, it almost felt like the aurora forces 'knew', and were smiling. As I was!)

Katy: This is the best "curtain" aurora, observed from underneath, that I have seen here in gif. I am saving this to enjoy and wonder at, and envy you, for my collection.
Totally gorgeous! I checked out the aurora alert site, but saw that the band of activity would not come down into the lower 48 -- alas.

I just ran across this poem, about the moon, but it fits here:

The one, who has seen the rising moon break out of the clouds at midnight, has been present like an archangel at the creation of light and of the world. -- Ralph W. Emerson

Everyone has already said it Kt. All I can do is add heaps of "ditto"s.

Actually, I thought I could add, "brilliant" as the other commenters left this out - but you used it. :-)

Ah! Nobody used stupendous. Let's go with that.
