Obviously, Tishu, you are not a regular reader of Joe's blog, or you wouldn't be surprised... ;' )

Only one question, Joe: stopped, or moving? :' )

Coloradans must have different sensibilities about road design. Perhaps they regard road travel as a Darwinian process.

I have traveled that road, albeit in dry, sunny conditions. I would do it again. It was one of the most beautiful drives I have ever experienced.

Denvereye, no courage here. Just another surprise blizzard while mountain driving. It quickly got worse near the top. By the time I decided to turn around it was bad going either direction. I went forward.

I hope you had the chains on all wheels! I've driven it in the summer and fall which is nerve racking enough. As for the comment on guard rails - I'm not sure there is any room for them. Congratulations on the AC and the courage to take the Million Dollar Highway in those conditions.

I've ridden a motorcycle over that road many times, but only in the summer and fall. There have been a few snowplow drivers and other killed on that road. There are crosses planted to commerate their lives about half way up Red Mountain Pass. There was a chain law on the pass on Wed. I live about 30 miles north of Ouray, CO.

Disturbing photo. Which Colorado highway or road number is that? In those conditions, why were you on that road? Did the state troopers fail to block access, or did you and those other drivers in the picture ignore the warnings and go around the barrier?

If I'm not mistaken, this is Hwy.550 which has been featured on a tv show about the most dangerous roads in the U.S.

NO NO NOOOOOO way in *BEEP* would I ever drive that road, snow or NO snow, that is just to scarey, and I've had recurring nightmares for as long as I can remember about driving off the side of a cliff

I'm with you, Trekincat! We were there a couple of years ago with intentions of driving that highway. But after a short way I made my husband turn around (thankfully there was a small construction turnaround on the mountain side of the road)! Yes, I'm a wimp. :) I do admit it is very beautiful and a GREAT shot!

Joe-- been on that road, but only in the summer. that entire area is one of my favorites. Even without snow, I hate those roads. You are a brave man to drive that, but of course you are an Alaskan experienced driver. Thanks for sharing Ouray and Durango with us. :0) Karen

Been there in the spring, but it was nice and sunny and no snow. I've never tried that road in the winter though. It was scary enough even so, that whenever I mention to my wife that we might go to Durango she always backs away from the idea.

I am surprised that there are no guardrails because usually in the mountains and passes there are guardrails all along it. I would not want to be travelling on the outside of that road.
