Very interesting Gil..I'll have to hunt the others down at another time...I so wish we had more owls in the area to take photos of..very elusive here..Usually spot one in a tree off one of the major highway's once in a blue moon..have only heard one at night [barred] in a neighbors tree couple months back...Love to hear them cackle..sounds like chimps almost! Well,,you keep bringing us these fantastic and adorable shots Gil,,don't forget to remind me to visit!:))

I hike the S Central NM desert a lot, and see burrowing owls' "hidey holes", but to photograph two owls is difficult. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much Eileen, BoazR, Dianne, and Mindi for all your great comments.
Mindi, These are smaller than a Crow. I think more like Pigeon size, but stocky, just a bit wider I think. When they stand up straight, they are about as tall as the Prairie Dogs that are amongst them in that field.
I have captured 2 or 3 in flight. I did post at least of couple of them in one of my galleries. I'd have to look for them. Don't remember if in separate dates or same date. They have beautiful feathers when spread out. In flight, they look like they are bigger.

I'm with Max....owls are one of my very favorite creatures..and it just amazes me how they let you photograph them and not fly off?? Have you actually gotten any in flight?? How big are they? I know they are small..are they as big as a crow for instance or much smaller? Your awesome shots are worthy of National Geo fame!!! Keep up the great work, and thanks so much for sharing your gifts!!!

Thank you much Ivan, and I think they are all around. Been seeing them now for past 2 months or so and sometimes I only see 1 or 2 then 5 & only a couple times I've seen up to 6. The unseen ones may be in one of the Prairie Dog Burrows. Also they are so small, they are sometimes hard to spot. I do think I may have seen 5, but had to turn around and go to the other road on the other side of the field, and not sure if another one flew to join the one I saw flying. Just lost sight of one while I drove around.
