It would be a scary surprise to open a door to find this critter staring at me. Fox snakes are present on the island, I photographed one years ago that was a very large specimen.

Eastern fox snakes are on Michigan's threatened/endangered species list. You can get in trouble killing a protected species. Check the following: Threatened_Endangered_Species__nonstrike__9-12._27 4586_7.pdf
Besides, I'd keep the snake and not even try to scare it off. A fox snake is not poisonous, and it eats rats (another common name for it is "rat snake") and mice. Rodents are more destructive and spoil more things for humans than any snake does.

Get rid of the mice. My neighbor, who never trapped the mice, always had the snakes. I trap year round, no snakes.
