While kayaking in the San Juan Islands, a pod of 20 orcas (killer whales) put on an incredible show for us, swimming within 10 feet, and breaching about 100 meters away.

What an amazing sight eh? 20 is a large pod, do you know if they were resident or migrating? If you saw seals swim for their life, they were migrating, if not, nice to see the resident pod so healthy. Few get to see this in their life, it is really special and I am sure you feel blessed.

WOW, that must have been unforgettable. I hope some day I can see that kind of a show :)

I think it must have been the K or L-Pod. My daughter has 2 "adopted" orcas from the small J-Pod to support whale protection.

Great shot Jeff! I was the pool photographer during Penny Palfrey's historic "Bridging the Cayman Islands" swim and we encountered a pod of nine individuals (including 2 calves) of pilot whales. I snapped a series of photos but this one is the best of them. It shows the inflatable with another photographer getting up close and personal with a mother (with the clipped dorsal fin) and the accompanying calf. They stayed around and gave us a show for about 15 minutes before moving on. This was approximately 30 miles west of Little Cayman.

This group is most likely a part of the "Southern Residents". One place to get info on these wonderful creations is at http://www.whaleresearch.com/. These guys don't eat mammals.
