The sky was incredible leading up to this moment. To the east, a strong orange/red glow from the rising sun. To the west, dark and ominous with lightning from the approaching storm. I really wish I could have time lapsed the sunrise in full but I was running around too much trying to record the lightning and get as many stills of the sky as possible. Then this happened.

Amazingly beautiful and I always appreciate the extra time it takes you to do this for us. Please be safe, one of those strikes looked like it was between you and the building.

Oh my this got a lot of feedback already! @SunsetSailor, no worries, I was under cover by this point and I do believe that ghostlike blue streak was an internal lens reflection

Absolutely amazing! If anyone gives this .gif less than a "10" it will show they know nothing about photography. Thank you so much for sharing this series of photos. I know there's luck involved and you have to be in the right place at the right time, but this is awesome! Thanks again.

I always know from the thumbnail which posts are yours. This one, as usual, is awesome. Are you sure that one wasn't that close to you? Scary moment.

First and foremost, thank God you lived to show us this. Holy moly was that a close one. WAAAAAY too close. It's amazing how lightning is truly so unpredictable. It seemed way off and then BAM right next to you. Incredible shots and an awesome "movie" for us to see. I love photographing lightning too but it's always in the back of my mind that I could get into some serious trouble someday doing it no matter how careful I am. Stay safe and thanks for the awesome show.

Hurricane, really cool time lapse photo! I gave you a "10"! That storm you had came from us (no need to thank us!) It started developing about 8pm in Iowa and built as it went! By the time it got to us (around 9pm I am in Illinois and only about 100 miles from Iowa border)it was a big red blob on wunderground's radar that went all the way from the Wisconsin border down to just south of me in Morris (about a 100 miles n-s) and the whole mess was moving east!! It breezed thru my area with 90 mph winds, hail, and the same lightning you have pictured! It looked like the Grand Finale at the 4th of July fireworks and was flashing non stop knocking down trees, power lines and damaging houses along the way! I was on the south edge of the blob, so only got the lightning and some rain! We lucked out! Hope you survived ok!

I keep getting great feedback on this so I shall say a big 'thank you' to all of the new comments! @Blueforester, I think the post that was mentioned was in my first comment I stated that the ghostlike blue streak was likely an internal lens reflection and not realistic of how close the lightning was yet people were still wondering if I was okay =P

You are a GREAT Photographer w/ gr8 skills. I too sometimes get people asking how to do this and what settings, things like that and with my experience, the best thing for me was just trial and error try all kinds of diff settings and find which one works best with your own camera!

Again awesome shot here.....

About Hurricane765
Hurricane765 UPDATED 1/11/12: Hello fellow photography lovers from all four corners of the globe! I am a 22 year old weather and nature photographer currently attending The State University at Oneonta as a Meteorology Major. I have been shooting for three and a half years now and have made outstanding progress in my art through learning techniques, strategies, perspectives, and learning about photography as a whole. I was a photographer for the Oneonta newspaper "The State Times" last semester and plan to be one again in the spring. Also, for the month of January, I have a gallery of 24 of my photos on display at my local library. This sums me up in a nutshell so please, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or anything else, feel free to message me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Until then, keep shooting! Sky Enjoy my photos? I have created a Facebook Page specifically for my photography called "Keep An Eye to the Sky". All of my pictures will be there, minus the GIFs unfortunately. Please feel free to become a fan and browse through my many photos from sunsets to birds to even lightning.
