Not long after you come off Rabbit Ears Pass, heading South, you see Whitely Peak. I had to research to find out what it was, and I am 99% sure that is what it is. The aspen could not make it all the way to the top, but the evergreens did.

Yes, it did, and I love the few stray aspens that
have made it up to what appears to be a slide
area. If they were hikers, the ones up there
would be Heidrun and Rudi...I would be in the
large aspen grove at the bottom! lol

Oh, thank you for your compliment - us being the stray aspens trying to head up towards the peak !
I gather it would be the climatic conditions that would prohibit the aspens growing all the way to the top - the pines and firs are much tougher and can tolerate colder temperatures better.Deciduous trees only grow to a certain elevation and then the tougher evergreens take over.
