This afternoon I went up to Pilot Mountain for the first time since the fire in October. It didn't look as bad as I thought; most large trees survived all right and even the shrubbery looked like it might return. I couldn't get a clear shot of the big dome because the trail to it was still closed while rangers cleared the area of dangerously overhanging trees and replaced burnt wooden fences. This is looking along the south side, where the damage was worst except for on top of the dome itself.

Thanks, Shirley; I was surprised it still appeared so scenic. UNTIL... you see what it looked like before the fire! Notice the brownish pine trees, scorched by the heat? Let me upload a couple more photos and I'll show you what I mean.
