A prescribed burn started Thursday, intended to clear brush and dead leaves from this state park, soon got out of control due to high winds and dry conditions that should have precluded the burn. By Saturday afternoon this is what the fire looked like from the park entrance. Smoke still blanketed the area by Saturday night.

Wow! Those prescribed burns are scary at times.
We had one for 2 or 3 days just a couple days ago. Glad they got it finished before our real strong gusty winds this weekend, tho we had rain with the winds.

Thank you, Kim, Marijka, and Gil! Everyone is just sick to see the smoke, flames, and destruction, and everyone is asking how the decision was made to go ahead with this burn even though there were 20-30 MPH winds and no significant rain for weeks.

It is amazing how many of the prescribed burns get out of control. Usually, if they had listed to the weatherguessers, they should not have proceeded with the plans.

I don't call them "weather guessers", I call them the "weather terrorists". They called it right about Sandy but the past early week's call, where Sandy visited before, was off base. Yes, the calls can be guesses.

Thank you, Julie, pbcbb, and Don! Don, there is always a lot of updraft over this mountain, even under normal conditions, because of its shape. So add fire to that, and yes, I would expect a lot of turbulence!

Beautiful in its own way, yes, but so ominous. Now, multiply this out-of-control, but still small, fire, by millions of acres, and you'll have a better idea of how so many in America's West feel when Forest Service "officials" get out the drip torches and start what often become, like this one, out-of-control conflagrations.
