Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Advisory, Wind Chill Watch
Issued: 9:56 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect Snow Advisory in effect from 5 PM Friday to 7 am
EST Saturday...
... Wind chill watch remains in effect from late Friday night
through Sunday morning...

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a lake effect
Snow Advisory... which is in effect from 5 PM Friday to 7 am EST
Saturday.

* Locations... Wayne... northern Cayuga... and Oswego counties.

* Timing... the lake effect Snow Advisory is in effect from late
Friday afternoon through early Saturday morning. The wind
chill watch is in effect from late Friday night through late
Sunday morning.

* Accumulations... 3 to 6 inches Friday night... and up to 2 inches
Saturday... leading to storm totals of 5 to 8 inches in the most
persistent lake snows.

* Winds... northwest 20 to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Temperatures... lows zero to 5 above Friday night. Highs zero to
5 above Saturday. Lows zero to 15 below Saturday night.

* Wind chill values... as low as 30 below late Friday night
through Sunday morning.

* Impacts... an Arctic front will rapidly drop south across Lake
Ontario late Friday afternoon and evening. This is expected to
result in a snow squall that has the potential to generate
rapidly falling visibilities in snow along with strong winds
and blowing snow. This will create a period of hazardous travel
conditions late Friday afternoon and Friday night. In
addition... wind chills will reach dangerous levels. Frigid
temperatures have the potential to result in frozen pipes...
frostbite and hypothermia.

* Forecaster confidence... forecaster confidence in the wind
chill watch is medium. Warmer waters of Lake Ontario may hold
wind chills to advisory criteria.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.

A wind chill watch is issued when strong winds will combine with
cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 15 degrees
below zero or colder for a period of several hours. If you will
be outdoors use common sense and dress warmly... making sure that
all exposed skin is covered. If possible... avoid prolonged
exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.
