... Second wettest August on record at Billings...
With a total rainfall of 2.78 inches... August 2010 was the second wettest August on record at Billings... behind only 1965 when 3.50 inches fell. This was a result of a persistently active weather pattern across the region... and a lack of any significant hot and dry periods.
A couple of wet days toward the end of the month helped to boost the August precipitation total. The 0.93 inches on the 30th was the 5th wettest August day on record... and the 0.74 inches on the 29th was the 10th wettest. The total of 1.67 inches at Billings on the 29th and 30th was the 4th wettest two day total on record in August.
Total precipitation for the three month period from June 1st through August 31st was 9.58 inches... making it the 2nd wettest meteorological Summer on record. The wettest was 9.90 inches in 1944.
For the calendar year... 14.65 inches of precipitation fell through August 31st. To date... this is the 7th wettest year and the wettest since 1991. The record precipitation from January through August is 18.68 inches in 1978.
All observations were taken at the Billings Airport... and records go back to 1934.
