Tuesday for the South Washington coast...
The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a coastal
Flood Advisory... which is in effect from 4 am Monday to noon PST
Tuesday. A high surf advisory has also been issued. This high
surf advisory is in effect from 4 PM Monday to 10 am PST Tuesday.
A strong Pacific system will generate large seas and high winds
Monday and Tuesday over the region. With tides approaching their
monthly maximum over the period when the storm surge arrives some
minor tidal overflow may occur... especially around the city of
Raymond where similar circumstances caused minor flooding in
January of 2004. The published tide is expected to peak at 10.4 feet
on Monday at noon... at 8.1 feet on Tuesday at 2 am which is when
most of the storm surge arrives... and at 10.1 feet at 1 PM on
Tuesday at Toke Point Washington. Luckily most of the storm surge
arrives during the weakest of the three highest tides. Tidal
anomalies are running around a half a foot. This storm will bring
two surges with the weaker of the two occurring Monday morning
followed by a stronger surge on Tuesday morning.
During the storm... seas will climb to 23 to 27 feet with periods
around 11 seconds. These large seas will make for dangerous beach
conditions with waves pummeling the surf zone which will only be
exacerbated by the prominence of the enhanced lunar tidal cycle.
Due to the magnitude of the high tides waves will travel much
further up the beach than usual creating a dangerous situation in
which extreme caution must be exercised. Large logs and other
debris can easily be tossed around by the force of these
waves... even the largest logs can roll easily on gently sloped
beaches in ankle deep water.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
