... Heavy rainfall possible across deep south Texas Monday through
Wednesday...
Widespread rich tropical moisture over the southern Gulf of Mexico
and the Bay of Campeche will combine with a broad low pressure
area extending across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico to increase
the possibility of heavy rainfall over the Rio Grande Valley and
deep south Texas from Monday through Wednesday. Isolated to
scattered showers and thunderstorms have been persistent across
the southwestern Gulf and the inland areas of deep south Texas and
northeast Mexico today. The shower and thunderstorm activity will
steadily become more organized over the next few days as the broad
surface low over the southwestern Gulf moves to the northwest
towards deep south Texas and northeastern Mexico.
Regardless of the level of tropical development of this feature...
areas of heavy rainfall are likely to develop as additional showers
and thunderstorms approach the Lower Texas coast as early as
tonight or Monday. The best potential for the heaviest widespread
rain is anticipated for late Monday through Tuesday as the surface
low moves inland over the Lower Texas coastline or the coastline
of northeastern Mexico. Overall total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3
inches can be expected across much of deep south Texas for the
end of the Labor Day weekend into the middle of next week with
possibly 4 to 6 inches occurring in some areas and isolated higher
amounts. Flood watches will likely be needed for portions of the
area Monday or Tuesday as the ground could become more saturated.
Also... with reservoirs in the area remaining full... the potential
for significant rises on the lower Rio Grande River... as well as
on local arroyos and creeks... is likely as runoff from heavy
rainfall fills into these areas during the first half of the week.
