Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Unsettled weather will continue across the northern half of the nation on Thursday. IN the East, a disturbance from the Midwest will lift northeastward through the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. The system will bring widely scattered rain showers, periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from the Tennessee and Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic. A mix of precipitation is expected in the Northeast Thursday through Friday. Expect periods of localized significant wet snowfall across the higher elevation and east of Lake Ontario. In addition to snow, periods of heavy rainfall are anticipated in much of New England. To the south, there will be a slight risk of severe thunderstorms ahead of an associated cold front late Thursday into Thursday night across parts of the Lower Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the Gulf States. Isolated supercells in these regions may produce large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes.

Behind this activity, energy from the Northwest will advance into the Upper Midwest. Moisture spreading into the Plains will aid in producing rain and snow in the Northern Plains and rain showers in the Mid-Mississippi Valley and western Ohio Valley. As this system advances southeastward, expect areas of snow showers to persist over portion of the Northwest and Central Rockies.

Elsewhere, warm temperatures will remain in place from the Central and Southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic, before the next trough of low pressure arrives Friday with cooler weather.

... Storms winding down Wednesday evening with more severe
thunderstorms expected Thursday night...

An upper level disturbance moved through the Tennessee Valley and
southern Appalachians this afternoon and evening... causing strong
winds aloft which re-fueled another round of showers and
thunderstorms. These storms produced several occurrences of pea to
quarter sized hail over the area... gusty winds and some brief
locally heavy rains. Snow melting over parts of southwestern
Virginia combined with the rains to cause minor flash flooding in
parts of Lee and wise counties. These showers and storms weakened
upon moving east into western North Carolina and central Virginia.

There is still a greater potential for severe storms on Thursday
night ahead of a strong cold front. As an area of low pressure
crosses the Ohio Valley... a strong south to southwest wind will
develop Thursday afternoon... and temperatures will rise into the
lower 70s in the Tennessee Valley. The warm moist air and gusty
southerly winds will generate strong to severe thunderstorms late
Thursday evening... moving east across the area through the early
morning hours Friday. Damaging straight line winds are expected to
be the main threat... with a potential for large hail and a few
tornadoes as well.

Since the main threat of severe weather is expected to arrive
after sunset Thursday night... residents of east Tennessee...
southwestern Virginia and southwestern parts of North Carolina are
urged to maintain a high level of awareness. Stay tuned to NOAA
Weather Radio and other local media for further details or updates.
