Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Statement as of 5:49 PM MDT on July 29, 2010
... Flood Advisory remains in effect for northeastern Custer and Central Pennington counties until 930 PM MDT...
At 543 PM MDT... runoff from heavy rain will continue to cause minor flooding of small streams and creeks. Doppler radar indicated one to three inches of rain has fallen over the Spring Creek and Battle Creek river basins.
Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding to occur. Some locations that will experience flooding include... areas along Spring Creek from Highway 16 downstream to south of Folsom... areas along Battle Creek from Hayward to east of Hermosa and areas along billover creek north of Hermosa.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...
The Flash Flood Watch continues for
* portions of northwest South Dakota... southwest South Dakota and west central South Dakota... including the following areas... in northwest South Dakota... northern foot hills. In southwest South Dakota... Bennett... Custer co plains... Fall River... Hermosa foot hills... Jackson... Shannon... southern Black Hills and southern foot hills. In west central South Dakota... central Black Hills... Haakon... northern Black Hills... Pennington co plains... Rapid City... southern Meade co plains and Sturgis/Piedmont foot hills.
* Through this evening
* scattered thunderstorms that occur this afternoon and evening have the potential to be slow moving and produce locally heavy rainfall. The greatest chance for flash flooding appears to be across southern South Dakota. However... some areas in the Black Hills through central South Dakota received heavy rains overnight and this morning... so any additional rainfall this afternoon and evening could produce flash flooding in those areas as well. The threat for flash flooding is expected to end by midnight.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain over the watch area... which may cause flash flooding along streams... creeks... canyons... and draws. If you are in the watch area... monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local media for updated forecasts. Be ready to quickly move to higher ground... if heavy rain occurs... rising water levels are observed... or a warning is issued.
