Areal Flood Watch
Statement as of 6:42 AM EDT on March 15, 2010
... Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...
The Flood Watch continues for
* a portion of southern New Hampshire... including the County of Hillsborough NH.
* Through this evening
* heavy rainfall of 3 to 5 inches over the weekend brought most streams to near bankfull. Another half to an inch of rain is expected today. Any periods of heavy rainfall lasting more than an hour or two could cause these small streams to quickly go into flood. There also remains a risk of urban and poor drainage flooding through much of today.
* In addition to the threat of small stream flooding... some of the larger rivers have risen above flood stage... such as the Contoocook and piscataquog rivers... and the souhegan river was on the verge of rising above flood stage at 630 am. Information on these rivers are contained in river flood warnings and statements.
In addition to stream flooding... there is likely to be flooding of basements... storm drains and catch basins.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. And never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It is far more dangerous than it may first appear.
