... Portland Maine sets various records on July 1st and 2nd...
Portland set records for the coldest high temperature on Wednesday and Thursday of this week as well as setting records for the smallest daily temperature range. On top of that Thursday had a record rainfall.
The high temperature on Wednesday was just 59 degrees. This broke the old record of 62 degrees for the coldest high on July 1st, which occurred in 1976. The low was 56... giving a daily temperature range of just 3 degrees which topped the record of 4 degrees set in 1979. The average temperature for the day, 58 degrees, was not a record for the coldest average temperature, missing the record of 57 set in 1988 by one degree.
Thursday was a repeat performance for temperatures... a high of 59 degrees and a low of 56 for the second day in a row. The high of 59 was a record for the coldest high for July 2nd. The old record was 63 degrees set in 1986. The daily temperature range of 3 degrees was a record for the smallest range... beating out the 5 degree range set in 1970. The average temperature for the day of 58 was not the coldest on record. That record remains at 56 degrees set in 1961.
The 59 degree high temperatures are not the coldest for the month of July. On July 4, 1992 the high of 57 was the coldest high ever recorded at the Portland jetport. The second coldest high was 58 degrees on July 6, 1956.
Temperature records at the jetport go back to 1941.
There was 1.41 inches of rain on Thursday. This established a new record rainfall for July 2nd... breaking the old record of 1.32 inches which was set in 1983.
Precipitation records in Portland go back to 1871.
