Tropical Weather: Tropical Cyclone Jasmine (Southern Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, February 09, 2012.

A disturbance dropping southeastward across the Great Basin will reach the southern Rockies on Thursday. The system will kick up light snow showers in the Central and Southern Rockies. Snow accumulation is expected to fairly light, with only an inch or two at best over the San Juans and

southern Sangres mountains. Meanwhile, another disturbance moving out of northeastern Mexico will move into Texas. This energy will interact with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will produce light rain showers in the Southern Plains. Elsewhere in the West, a warm front will move through western Washington, bringing light showers to the Pacific Northwest through the morning. Offshore flow and ridging could give clearing and

warmer temperature to the region by the afternoon.

In the East, a cold front from southern Canada will drop into the Great Lakes and Central Plains during the day. This system will kick up snow showers in parts of the Upper Great Lakes, primarily in northern Michigan. Elsewhere, high pressure builds over the Eastern Valleys with generally calm and dry weather conditions.

Lake Effect Snow Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:37 AM CST on February 09, 2012

... Lake effect snow watch in effect from Friday afternoon through
Saturday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a lake effect
snow watch... which is in effect from Friday afternoon through
Saturday afternoon.

* Timing... lake effect snow is expected to develop by early Friday
afternoon and continue through Friday night and Saturday morning
before shifting east of the watch area. North to northeast winds
will initially focus the most numerous snow showers along the
Illinois shore Friday afternoon... with the focus then expected
to shift more into lake and Porter counties in Northwest Indiana
overnight Friday night. Winds will eventually back to the
northwest on Saturday... allowing the bands of lake effect snow
to move east of Porter County in the early afternoon.

* Snow accumulations... while lake effect snow can be highly
localized... amounts in excess of 6 inches are possible from the
city of Chicago southeast into Northwest Indiana.

* Other impacts... slippery travel... reduced visibility... blowing
and drifting snow and single digit wind chills.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A lake effect snow watch means there is a potential for a large
amount of snow in only a few hours. Visibilities and depth of
snow can vary greatly... impacting travel significantly. Continue
to monitor the latest forecasts.
