Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 06, 2012. A rare February tropical disturbance continued to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to south Florida to the tone of several inches. Even if the disturbance does not develop further, widespread rain and thunderstorms will continue through the rest of the day.

This precipitation represented the only significant precipitation in the country, further prolonging the relatively dry and mild Winter the country has experienced. The only other light precipitation was high elevation snow that fell in the Colorado Rockies.

Generally mild temperatures continued for much of the country, as been a staple for nearly the entire Winter. The coldest areas were noted in the Northern Rockies and Intermountain West where afternoon temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for most areas.

The Northeast rose into the 40s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 60s, 70s, and some 80s in Florida. The Northwest rose into the 40s and 50s, while the Southwest saw temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

... Record for latest first zero in Des Moines broken...

The lowest temperature so far at the Des Moines Airport this winter
season has been 1 degree above zero. The record for the latest
occurrence of a zero or lower temperature in Des Moines was on the
6th of February in 1914... when it was 2 below zero. With virtually
no chance of falling to zero by midnight tonight... the record will
be broken.

There has never been a winter in the 134 years of record that the
temperature at Des Moines has not fallen to zero or below. It is
becoming increasingly likely that record may fall as well.

In addition... the mean temperature for the meteorological winter to
date... December 1st through February 5th... has been 32.1 degrees.
This winter has been the warmest on record thus far. The previous
record was 31.8 degrees in the winter of 1918-19.
