Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, May 20, 2013.

Heavy rains and chances of severe thunderstorm activity continued for areas of the Plains into the Midwest on Tuesday as a broad, nearly stationary low remained over the Northern Plains. As the system lingered, ample moisture streamed northward from the Gulf of Mexico, while an associated cold front reached from the low southward through Central and Southern Plains. The sharpening cold front combined with a dry line in the Southern Plains and the moisture laden conditions of the Central U.S. set the stage for multiple clusters of thunderstorms to develop across the Plains and into the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Portions of eastern/central Oklahoma, north-central Texas, northwestern Arkansas, southern Missouri, far southeastern Kansas remained at moderate risk of severe thunderstorm activity as environmental conditions remained favorable for strong tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and very large hail. Areas surrounding this moderate risk region from the parts of the central Texas into the Upper Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Valley were at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development with hail and isolated tornadoes.

Meanwhile, areas of heavy rain and widely scattered showers persisted near the low and it\\\\'s associated warm front in portions of the north-central U.S. Continued precipitation in this already saturate region combined with rapid runoff maintained flood concerns from parts of North Dakota into northwestern Wisconsin.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed in the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern corner of the nation as a weak upper trough of low pressure dropped southward over the region. To the north, additional showers were possible in the Northeast.

Nowcast as of 8:26 PM EDT on May 20, 2013
Through this evening...scattered showers and a thunderstorm will continue to develop over the Atlantic waters of South Florida and move into the East Coast Metro areas before dissipating. Any storms that do move onshore will be capable of producing wind gusts up to 35 mph...lightning strikes...and heavy rainfall. If you see lightning or hear thunder move inside until the storms have passed by. Mariners can also expect higher seas in and near the showers and thunderstorms.

Areal Flood Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:49 PM EDT on May 20, 2013

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued an

* Urban Flood Advisory for...
eastern Broward County in Southeast Florida...
this includes the cities of... Tamarac... sunrise... Plantation... Fort
Lauderdale... Davie...

* until 1045 PM EDT

* at 846 PM EDT... Doppler radar has indicated that a cluster of
thunderstorms have been slowly moving over eastern Broward County
during the last hour which has produced between 2 to 4 inches of
rainfall on top of the already 3 to 5 inches of rainfall that has
fallen from the earlier afternoon storms. These storms will
continue to move slowly to the northwest producing another 1 to
2 inches of rainfall during the next couple of hours. If the rainfall
rates increase more than forecast... then a Flash Flood Warning
maybe needed for this area.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. When encountering flooded roads make the
smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

A Flood Advisory means ponding of water in urban or other areas is
occurring or is imminent. Runoff may also elevate water levels in
canals and ditches.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:39 PM EDT on May 20, 2013

... A significant weather advisory is in effect for eastern Broward
County... for frequent to excessive lightning and gusty winds of 45 to
55 mph...

* until 945 PM EDT

* at 834 PM EDT... National Weather Service meteorologists detected a
strong thunderstorm near Lauderhill... and moving northwest at 10
mph.

* The storm will affect...
Lauderdale Lakes...
Lauderhill...
Plantation...
Davie...
North Lauderdale...
sunrise...
and surrounding communities.

The primary impacts will be frequent to excessive lightning and gusty
winds of 45 to 55 mph. Lightning is the number one weather related
killer in Florida. Trees and open shelters offer no protection. These
winds can down small tree limbs and branches... and blow around
unsecured small objects. Seek shelter in a safe building until the
storm passes.

This activity was also developing in an environment favorable for the
formation of funnel clouds. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and
local media for additional updates and possible warnings.

Torrential rainfall can be expected... causing temporary ponding on
some roads and minor flooding of poor drainage areas. Motorists
should slow down in heavy rainfall to reduce the risk of hydroplaning
and leave a safe distance between other vehicles.

Residents near the path of should remain on the alert for additional
statements and possible warnings.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further
details or updates.
