It was nasty..! We've had quite a bit of those haboobs already this year. That one was different. Now - with this excellent image, I can observe the rotation above. I had a thought (that evening) that the absolute blackness & extreme dust/dirt & sand.. may have been sucked up by a vortex. However, the Phoenix weather service made no mention of that. I think it was a possible F0 touch & go thing. Plenty of empty deserts & fields out there.

Powerful photo! What was the aftermath?

A lot of downed trees and tons of dust on and in everything. Truly a mess.

Exquisite photography of a mind blowing scene.
I love your composition, road leading to a biblical event.
I get a real feeling of anticipation, awe struck beauty, imminent suffocation, but I can't stop watching!
Did you know it was coming?
Did you anticipate this shot?
Excellent work!!!

Thanks!! I only knew this was coming when I could see it on the horizon in our backyard. Shooting these always gets best when the wall is almost on top of you.

Yow! It's events like this that make me appreciate our blah weather here in Northern Virginia - although it does limit our photo ops. Hope everyone has dusted off and is breathing easier in Arizona, for a spell at least. Congrats on a superb AC!

The Haboob was 3000 feet high and had a 60 mile range. I live 30 miles from Phoenix and when the storm hit Sun City it was still huge.
You took the best photo I have seen so far.

This is amazing! I once saw a dust storm like this in the north of West Australia coming towards me and it's the most terrifying sight, knowing it's coming right at you! Even inside, the dust got into everything as it passed over us!
