Gilchrist, TX (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Note the sandbag along the water in Gilchrist. These stretch intermittently along the gulf where the homes in Gilchrist survived. Even so, there are very few homes left in Gilchrist. The dunes are gone along HWY 87, and in many areas the water reaches the road.

FYI. Just thought I'd note to anyone interested that the "sand bags" are actually a dune reclamation project that was done a number of years ago. They were supposed to help anchor the dunes and make them sturdier. They were covered with sand, but Ike uncovered many of them on the pennisula. They have since been removed.
