Notice the crack above the splinter. During the fantastic winds of a tornado a tree can torque until it splits open for a moment. Occasionally something being flung about by the tornado will get thrown into the crack just before the crack closes. So the splinter wasn't driven into the tree, but was trapped in a crack that closed back on it.

We tend to notice the interesting things, like this splinter at just the right angle.
