Frost Forest

Mahomet, IL (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: A light frost visited the vegetation along the bike trail this morning. Longer frost needles formed on grass stems poking through a thin sheet of ice caused by a small hillside spring producing these ephemeral white trees. The physics is probably more complicated, but the length of the needles seems to indicate that the air temperature is colder near the ice.

How cool is this? You had to get down, but you probably didn't get dirty on that ice! Terrific reward for your efforts. Kudos, and AC congrats to you!

About phnielsen

Many of my pictures are taken on my morning run. In the years before digital cameras, I saw lots of transient natural phenomena worthy of being photographed, but camera equipment was too big and bulky to carry while running. Now there are small versatile digital cameras available that can do most everything that used to take a case of equipment.
