Hawatana,..It's mixed in with the sand(gravel) they disperse on all the roads in the winter for traction and ice control...That's the only reason they lick the roads according to what the scientists surmise.

Fantastic shot Jim. When I first saw it, I thought someone else had stumbled onto my Big Horn Herd.
See some in similar highway in Northern NM, and also another Herd close to Taos NM. My favorite Wildlife animals. They put on a fantastic show sometimes at the Rio Grande Gorge Cliffs. Have to hold my breath just watching them sometimes.
