A mesocyclone is a giant rotating updraft. All supercells contain mesocyclones. They cause tornadoes! So what you are looking at in this photo is the mesocyclone - a piece of this supercell.

Thanks for all the comments! This was a very nice chase as it only moved about 5mph. I literally sat in this same spot for about 30 minutes. Fortunately we found an underpass on 76 just as the baseballs were coming down!
