Beautiful Tyrant

Hotchkiss, CO (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: If you have a Roufus Hummingbird at your house, you know what I'm talking about. If not..they 'stake out' a feeder (or two) and divebomb any other hummingbirds who try to eat at that feeder. They can keep it up all day, too. They sure are pretty, though, glistening copper in the sunlight!

Hey, Linda, if they don't get brave, they won't
eat. The rufous is quite protective. What looks
like a big dark patch under his chin glows neon
red in the sun..almost looks metallic! He is a
real beauty. You just have to put out enough
feeders so he can't 'guard' them all at once.

I've never seen anything like him! Gorgeous shot, Kat! I see the brave one at the corner thinking about risking it. :) 10!

They are here all summer, Mark! We have a yard
full of several kinds. We have six feeders out,
plus we have lots of hollyhocks and sunflowers,
so they all get something, in spite of Roufus!

They came through earlier this year and the Anna's were holding them off pretty well but eventually the Roufus won out.
Only got to see them for about a week and they were gone.

I am SO SAD that WU is getting rid of the photography section. This has been the most wonderful outlet for me and my photography and I have met so many awesome people and seen photography that has been amazing on so many levels, because of WU. Thank you for the opportunities you gave us with your site. Man, I will really, really miss this. :-(
