Caption: An American Airlines (callsign “American”) Boeing 737-800, tail number N950AN, on approach to KLGA.

Just another daytime airliner picture, right?  Wrong!  It’s a twilight shot at longer exposure, and a one-in-a-million shot at that!

Thanks and thanks!

*Lots* of trial'n'error... :D

One of the biggest problems is with autofocus, that lots of times it "hunts" closer and farther, and only sometimes gets it absolutely right (on a moving target, with my own jiggling of the camera contributing lots to that), and it's harder to lock onto a target in dimmer light (hence the orange "autofocus helper" that lights up close subjects when it's darker out).

So factor in all those, plus the 1/f rule and the percentages involved, and you shouldn't expect more than 1 shot in 20 to be halfway decent, maybe 1 in 100 to be awesome.

Like I said, *lots* of trial'n'error...

I really don't know how you managed to get this shot (even after you explained it), but this one just became my favorite plane shot of yours! I absolutely love the color of the aircraft too. Congrats!

Oh, and in case anyone wants to read up on the "1/f rule", here's what a quick search turned up that summarises it pretty well:

Enjoy!

Just another daytime airliner picture, right?  Wrong!  It’s a twilight shot at longer exposure, and a one-in-a-million shot at that!

Note the nosegear door just opening and the main gear just beginning to drop, and the strobe rather brightly lighting up the wheels and inboard sides of the engines!

Plus, it was taken at f/2.8, 200mm, +0.3EV, 1/40sec!  Yeah, “1/f rule” be damned, 200mm and 1/40sec!, and a moving target as well!  Needless to say, I’m pretty happy with this shot.  ☺
