Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:21 PM EDT Aug. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect from Tuesday morning through
Tuesday evening...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect from Tuesday morning through
Tuesday evening.

* Locations... all Atlantic Ocean beaches.

* Rip current risk... high.

* Surf height... 3 to 5 feet.

* Lightning risk... low.

* Timing... through Tuesday evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars and near structures such as groins... jetties... and
piers. Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to learn about any
surf hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention to flags and
posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current... relax and
float... and do not swim against the current. If able... swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape... face the
shore and call or wave for help.

Heat Advisory
Issued: 3:43 PM EDT Aug. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Heat advisory in effect from noon to 6 PM EDT Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a heat advisory,
which is in effect from noon to 6 PM EDT Tuesday.

* Heat index values... around 100 due to temperatures in the low to
mid 90s and dewpoints in the low to mid 70s.

* Timing... Tuesday afternoon

* impacts... the heat and humidity may cause heat stress during
outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and
humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees
for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any
length of time.

New York City residents should call 3-1-1 to obtain "beat the
heat" safety tips.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home, or go to a place that
has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members
and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.
