Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 2:31 PM EDT Aug. 18, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Newport has issued a

* flood advisory for...
Mainland Dare County in eastern North Carolina...
central Tyrrell County in eastern North Carolina...

* until 400 PM EDT

* at 229 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause minor flooding in the advisory area.
About 2 to 3 inches of rain have fallen over the last few hours
and an additional 1 to 2 inches will be possible. This additional
rain will result in minor flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Stumpy Point, Gum Neck, Manns Harbor, Manteo, East Lake, Buffalo
City and Frying Pan Landing.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

... A line of strong thunderstorms will affect Mainland Dare...
northwestern Outer Banks Dare and northern Tyrrell counties...

At 145 PM EDT, radar indicated an area of strong thunderstorms were
located along a line extending from Mashoes to 7 miles west of Gum
Neck. Movement was east at 15 mph. These storms could produce wind
gusts in excess of 30 mph. The storms will be crossing the sounds to
impact Manteo and the Outer Banks beaches over the next hour.

Locations potentially impacted include... Kill Devil Hills, Manns
Harbor, Nags Head, Alligator, Mashoes, Manteo, East Lake, Whalebone
Junction , Colington, Buffalo City, Frying Pan Landing, Jockeys
Ridge State Park, Roanoke Island festival park, Wright Brothers
National Monument, Nags Head fishing pier, Avalon pier, Wanchese,
Outer Banks fishing pier and Point Harbor.

Beach goers should watch the sky and seek shelter if thunder is
heard approaching as soon as possible.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may cause
localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.
