Air Quality Alert
Issued: 9:00 AM MDT Aug. 19, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Air quality alert in effect until 900am MDT Sunday...

The Montana department of environmental quality has issued an air
quality alert for Broadwater, Deer Lodge, Gallatin, Granite,
Jefferson, Lewis And Clark, Mineral, Missoula, Powell, Ravalli, and
Silver Bow counties in effect until further notice due to increased
fire activity in west-central Montana. Air quality is expected to
vary between moderate and unhealthy throughout the day. Impacts are
most significant in the Seeley Lake area. Smoke from the Rice Ridge
fire is causing hazardous air quality impacts between midnight and
noon. The Missoula city-County health department recommends residents
spend as little night time as possible in Seeley Lake due to the
dangerous overnight pollution levels. This alert will be updated
again at 900am 8/20/2017.

An air quality alert means that particulates have been trending
upwards and that an exceedence of the 24 hour National ambient air
quality Standard (naaqs) has occurred or may occur in the near
future.

As of 900am, particulate levels in Seeley Lake are hazardous

As of 900am, particulate levels in Florence, Helena, and Rock Creek
are unhealthy

As of 900am, particulate levels in Drummond, Hamilton, and
Philipsburg are unhealthy for sensitive groups

As of 900am, particulate levels in Arlee, Bozeman, Butte, Frenchtown,
Missoula, and Superior are moderate

When air quality is hazardous... state and local health officials
recommend that everyone should avoid any outdoor exertion; people
with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should
remain indoors.

When air quality is unhealthy... state and local health officials
recommend that people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly,
and children should avoid prolonged exertion; everyone else should
limit prolonged exertion.

When air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups... state and local
health officials recommend that people with respiratory or heart
disease, the elderly and children should limit prolonged exertion.

When air quality is moderate... state and local health officials
recommend that unusually sensitive people should consider reducing
prolonged or heavy exertion.
