Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 8:05 PM CDT Jul. 29, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
southern DuPage County in northeastern Illinois...
northeastern De Kalb County in north central Illinois...
north central Will County in northeastern Illinois...
central Kane County in northeastern Illinois...
south central Cook County in northeastern Illinois...

* until 200 PM CDT Saturday

* the heavy rain has ended across the warned area. However... runoff
from the 2 to 4 inches of rain continues to result in flooding
with numerous roads reported to be blocked by flood waters.
DuPage County emergency management reports significant impacts
across southern DuPage County from 75th street south. Although no
additional heavy rain is expected tonight... flood waters will be
slow to recede into Saturday morning.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Aurora... Naperville... Bolingbrook... Orland Park... Wheaton...
Downers Grove... Lombard... Romeoville... St. Charles... Glen Ellyn...
West Chicago... Batavia... Westmont... Homer Glen... Lisle... Geneva...
Sycamore... Hinsdale... Lemont and La Grange.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.

Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 8:53 PM CDT Jul. 29, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through late
Saturday night...

* location... northeast Illinois beaches.

* Forecast wave heights... 3 to 5 feet.

* Strong rip currents and structural currents expected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you into deeper water along the pier structure.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most
significant wave and current impacts. Impacts at beaches with
protective breakwalls or jetties will be subject to the
orientation of structures as well as wind and wave direction.
