Watches & Warnings

Coastal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 9:48 PM AST Sep. 19, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 6 am AST Friday...
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM AST Friday...
... High rip current risk remains in effect through Sunday afternoon...

* coastal flooding... salt water intrusion over local roads and
low-lying areas near the beaches causing minor flooding,
especially during times of high tide.

* Waves and surf... breaking waves between 9 to 13 feet and
occasionally higher.

* Location... from the northwest to northeast coast of Puerto
Rico.

* Timing... the next high tide for Aguadilla is at 11:33 PM at 1.09
feet. For San Juan, it is at 12:03 am at 1.17 feet and for
Fajardo, it is at 11:53 PM at 1.16 feet.

* Impacts... minor flooding along coastal roads due to salt water
intrusion. Large breaking waves that can knock persons and
animals off of rocks and jetties and into the sea and cause
coastal erosion. Strong currents that can carry even the
strongest of swimmers out to sea.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions.

A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
