Stand on the verandas that encircle this old, three-story, cedar-shingle inn and admire the ocean views. Two rooms have wet bars and kitchenettes; others have four-poster or canopy beds, handcrafted armoires, and English antiques. All rooms contain extras, such as heated towel bars. The story of this landmark's near demolition, its rescue, and the move to the present site is told in framed photographs, letters, and news accounts lining the sunny dining room. In fall and winter, Nature Conservancy birding weekends include excursions to the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. Pros:

The centerpiece of Fort Macon State Park is the 1834 pentagon-shape fortress used first to protect the coast against foreign invaders and pirates, then against Yankees during the Civil War. You can explore on your own or take a guided tour. The 365-acre park set in a maritime forest also offers picnicking areas, hiking trails, a mile-long beachfront with a large bathhouse and refreshments, and summer concerts. Rangers offer a wide selection of nature talks and walks, including Civil War weapons demonstrations, bird or butterfly hikes, and beach explorations. Follow the boardwalk over the dunes to the beach, which, due to strong currents, has lifeguards on duty June through Labor Day from 10 to 5:45. Hyde County's Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest natural lake in North Carolina. Fed only by rainwater and runoff, the lake is 3 feet below sea level. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is made up of more than 5,800 acres of marsh on the Atlantic Flyway. To bird-watchers' delight more than 365 species have been sighted from its observation platforms and spotting scopes and by visitors who venture into the refuge. Pea Island is home to threatened peregrine falcons, piping plovers, and tundra swans, which winter here. A visitor center on Route 12 has an information display and maps of the two trails. Remember to douse yourself in bug spray, especially in spring. Guided canoe tours are available for a fee. www.fws.gov/peaisland. Admission: Free.
