1 British Cemetery
British Cemetery

Ocracoke Village, NC 27960

On May 11, 1942, the HMS Bedfordshire,

an armed British trawler on loan to the United States, was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank with all 37 hands lost off the coast of Ocracoke Island. The men were buried on Ocracoke in a corner of the community graveyard. Each year the Queen of England remembers this loss by sending a British flag, via a personal envoy, to the tiny, nicely landscaped British Cemetery, which is tended by Ocracoke Coast Guard Station personnel. The wreck was discovered in 1980 and some artifacts were recovered. It's still frequented by divers.

3 Lake Phelps
Lake Phelps
2252 Lake Shore Rd.
Creswell, NC 27928

At 16,600 acres, Lake Phelps, a part of Pettigrew State Park, is a Carolina Bay 5 mi across and about 4 feet deep that has long been considered a treasure by boaters and anglers. In 1985 researchers began to prize it for other reasons. Discovered underneath the sand in the beautifully clear water were ancient American Indian artifacts, including 30 dugout canoes, one of which dates back some 4,400 years. Two are displayed in Pettigrew Park. The park also includes a boat ramp, canoe launch, fishing pier, and camping sites.

5 Portsmouth Village
Portsmouth Village

Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC 28531

Portsmouth Village was inhabited from 1753 until the early 1970s. At its peak in 1860, the census listed 685 permanent residents. It was a "lightering" town, where ships heavy with cargo had to unload to smaller boats that could navigate the shallow Ocracoke Inlet. But the Civil War and the dredging of a deeper inlet at Hatteras were the beginning of the end for Portsmouth. By 1956 there were 17 inhabitants; the last two left in 1971. Today the public can tour the visitor center, the one-room schoolhouse, the post office and general store, the Methodist church, and the turn-of-the-20th-century Life Saving Station (a multiroom Coast Guard station). The walking trails can be difficult because of standing water, sandy soil, and mosquitoes. Public restrooms are not abundant; bring your own food and water. www.nps.gov/calo or www.friendsofportsmouthisland.com. Admission: Free. Hours: Visitor center and buildings Apr.-Nov.

White Lake, NC 28337

The white, sandy bottom at this Carolina bay in Bladen County is clearly visible. Because the lake has no currents, tides, or hidden depressions, it has a reputation as the "nation's safest beach." Although White Lake has only 500 year-round residents, the lake draws 200,000 people each summer because of its swimming, boating, wake boarding, jet skiing, and waterskiing opportunities. Other attractions include an amusement park and tent and RV-camping accommodations. www.whitelakenc.com.

7 Wright Brothers National Memorial
Wright Brothers National Memorial
1401 National Park Dr.
Kill Devil Hills, NC 27954

The Wright Brothers National Memorial, a 60-foot granite monument that resembles the tail of an airplane, stands as a tribute to Wilbur and Orville Wright. The two bicycle mechanics from Ohio took to the air here on December 17, 1903. You can see a replica of the Flyer

and stand on the spot where it made four takeoffs and landings, the longest flight a distance of 852 feet. Exhibits and an informative talk by a National Park Service ranger bring the event to life. The Wrights had to bring in the unassembled airplane by boat, along with all their food and supplies for building a camp. They made four trips to the site beginning in 1900. The First Flight is commemorated annually. www.nps.gov/wrbr. Admission: $4. Hours: Sept.-May, daily 9-5; June-Aug., daily 9-6.
