1 Cavalier Hotels
Cavalier Hotels
Atlantic Ave. at 42nd St.
Virginia Beach, VA 23451

In the quieter north end of town, this 18-acre resort complex combines the original Cavalier Hotel of 1927, a seven-story redbrick building on a hill, with an oceanfront high-rise built across the street in 1973. The clientele is about evenly divided between conventioneers and families. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald stayed regularly in the original hotel. If you stay in the hilltop building you can see the water—and get to it easily by shuttle van or a short walk. The newer building overlooks 600 feet of private beach. There's a fee for tennis, but the other athletic facilities are free. Pros:

great choice of people who appreciate historic properties.

Cons:

might be too staid for spring-break students. www.cavalierhotel.com. 400 rooms. In-room: Internet. In-hotel: restaurants, pools, tennis courts, gym, beach. Credit cards accepted.

Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center
717 General Booth Blvd.
Virginia Beach, VA

The sea is the subject at the popular Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, a massive facility with more than 200 exhibits. This is no place for passive museumgoers; many exhibits require participation. You can use computers to predict the weather and solve the pollution crisis, watch the birds in the salt marsh through telescopes on a deck, handle horseshoe crabs, take a simulated journey to the bottom of the sea in a submarine, and study fish up close in tanks that re-create underwater environments. The museum is almost 2 mi inland from Rudee Inlet at the southern end of Virginia Beach. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has a nature trail—well worth it, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes. www.virginiaacquarium.com. Admission: Aquarium $11.95; combination ticket for aquarium and IMAX $16.95. Hours: Memorial Day-Labor Day, daily 9-7; Labor Day-Memorial Day, daily 9-5.
