1 Mariners' Museum
Mariners' Museum
100 Museum Dr.
Newport News, VA 23606

A world history of seagoing vessels and the people who sailed them occupies the outstanding Mariners' Museum, inside a 550-acre park. An alliance between the museum and the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City allows the two institutions to share collections, exhibitions, and educational programs. Among the more than 50 full-size craft on display are a Native American bark canoe, a sailing yacht, a speedboat, a gondola, a Coast Guard cutter, and a Chinese sampan. In separate galleries you can often watch the progress of a boat under construction; view ornate and sometimes huge figureheads; examine the watermen's culture of the Chesapeake Bay; and learn about the history of the U.S. Navy. The museum also holds artifacts from the RMS Titanic

and remains of the ironclad USS

Monitor,

which served in the 1862 Peninsula Campaign and was recovered from the coast of North Carolina. A 63,500-square-foot addition, the USS

Monitor

Center

,

houses the ironclad ship and Civil War exhibits. www.mariner.org. Admission: $12.50. Hours: Daily 10-5, Sun. noon-5.

2 Norfolk Naval Station
Norfolk Naval Station
9079 Hampton Blvd.
Norfolk, VA

The Norfolk Naval Station, on the northern edge of the city, is an impressive sight, home to more than 100 ships of the Atlantic Fleet. The base was built on the site of the Jamestown Exposition of 1907; many of the original buildings survive and are still in use. Several large aircraft carriers, built at nearby Newport News, call Norfolk home port and can be seen from miles away, especially at the bridge-tunnel end of the base. You may see two, each with a crew of up to 6,300, beside slightly smaller amphibious carriers that discharge marines in both helicopters and amphibious assault craft. The submarine piers, floating dry docks, supply center, and air station are all worth seeing. The Victory Rover

and

Carrie B.

provide boat tours from downtown Norfolk to the naval station, and Hampton Roads Transit operates tour trolleys most of the year, departing from the naval-base tour office. Visitor access is by tour only, and photo ID is required to enter the base. www.navstanorva.navy.mil/tour. Admission: Tour $7.50 (cash only and there is no ATM on premises). Hours: Tours: Jan. 1-Mar. 15, Tues. -Sun. at 1:30; Mar. 16-May 17, every ½ hr 11-2; May 18-Aug. 30, every 30 mins 10-2; Aug. 31-Nov. 1, hourly 11-2; Nov. 2-Dec. 31, Tues. -Sun. at 1:30.
