Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 12:48 PM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 am PST
Sunday...
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST this
afternoon...
... High surf warning remains in effect from 4 PM this afternoon
to 6 am PST Sunday...

* coastal flooding... a combination of large wave runup and high
tide Saturday morning will lead to an increased risk of minor
coastal flooding of low lying areas such as beach parking lots
and campgrounds.

* Surf... surf of 10 to 15 feet today will build to 20 to 30 feet
this evening and continue through Saturday. The surf will
slowly diminish Sunday through Tuesday... but will remain above
high surf thresholds.

* Impacts... the large surf will likely cause additional beach
erosion and could potentially damage coastal structures... such
as piers. Strong rip currents that will create a risk of ocean
drowning. Sneaker waves can suddenly overrun previously dry
beaches and jetties. Minor coastal flooding of beach parking
lots... walkways and campgrounds is possible... especially
around the times of high tide each morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf warning means that large and battering surf could
damage coastal structures and will make swimming and rock jetties
very dangerous.

A high surf advisory means that high surf and rip currents will
make swimming and rock jetties dangerous.

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current... swim back to
shore. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help.

A coastal Flood Advisory means that minor and shallow flooding is
occurring or imminent. Avoid low-lying coastal areas... especially
during high tides.

Special Statement
Issued: 7:11 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Threat of strong thunderstorms with potential for locally
damaging wind gusts... heavy downpours... small hail... and isolated
waterspouts today across southwest California...

A strong upper level jet stream combined with increasing
instability will bring a chance of thunderstorms today across
southwest California... especially this afternoon. The greatest
threat of thunderstorms will be across Ventura and Los Angeles
counties as well as the adjacent coastal waters. Some of these
thunderstorms could be strong... with the main threats being
locally damaging winds that could down trees and power lines as
well as brief heavy downpours causing localized roadway flooding.
In addition... any thunderstorm that develops today will be capable
of producing small hail and dangerous cloud to ground
lightning... including beach areas.

Conditions are also favorable for isolated waterspouts across
the coastal waters... especially south of Ventura. Remember that
waterspouts do have the potential to come ashore as weak tornados
across coastal communities. The threat of strong thunderstorms
is expected to diminish by tonight.
