Special Statement
Issued: 2:30 PM EST Jan. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... An area of moderate to heavy rain will affect
Calhoun... northwestern Nicholas... northeastern
Kanawha... southwestern Gilmer... northeastern Putnam... western
Braxton... Roane... southeastern Jackson... Clay and northwestern
Fayette counties...

At 229 PM EST, an area of moderate to heavy rain was moving slowly
southwest through the area. This area of rain was producing rainfall
rates up to an inch in an hour. As this rain moves through, runoff
will continue into small streams, creeks and roadside ditches. This
may cause minor flooding problems, especially in low lying areas and
poor drainage areas.

Locations impacted include...
Charleston, Spencer, Winfield, Glenville, Sutton, Grantsville, Clay,
Sissonville, Montgomery, Buffalo, Clendenin, Gassaway, Smithers,
Gauley Bridge, Pratt, pinch, Arnoldsburg, Kenna, Cedar Creek State
Park and Glen.

This includes the following highways...
Interstate 79 between mile markers 1 and 57, between mile markers 60
and 65, and between mile markers 68 and 72.
Interstate 77 in West Virginia between mile markers 102 and 130.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

Slow down to reduce the chance for hydroplaning.
