Watches & Warnings

Heat Advisory
Issued: 1:06 PM EDT Aug. 17, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Heat advisory in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a heat
advisory, which is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening.

* Heat index values... will range from 105 to 109 due to
temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s combined with
dew points in the mid to upper 70s.

* Timing... elevated heat index values will continue through
the afternoon into the early evening.

* Impacts... the heat and humidity may cause heat stress during
outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. Hot temperatures and high humidity will create a
situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of
fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and
check up on relatives and neighbors.

Special Statement
Issued: 5:26 PM EDT Aug. 17, 2017 – National Weather Service

... A strong thunderstorm will affect central Nash and southeastern
Franklin counties until 600 PM EDT...

At 525 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 8
miles northwest of Nashville, moving east at 10 mph.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Heavy rain and minor flooding and deadly cloud to ground lightning
will also be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Rocky Mount, Nashville, Dortches, Bunn, Red Oak, Spring Hope,
Castalia and Tar River Reservoir.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Seek shelter in a nearby building or vehicle. Wind gusts as high as
40 mph are capable of knocking down tree limbs and blowing around
trash cans, potted plants, lawn furniture and other light outdoor
objects.

Locally heavy rain will quickly reduce visibility and result in
ponding of water on roadways, standing water in low lying areas, and
minor flooding of creeks, streams, and areas of poor drainage.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution to avoid
hydroplaning, especially in urban areas where prolonged heavy rain
can quickly lead to flooding.
