Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 4:32 PM AKDT Jul. 22, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 415 am akdt Monday for
the Tanana river at Fairbanks...

Several inches of rain over the past few days has caused the Tanana
river to rise to bankfull stage. As a result the ground water table
has risen... causing ponding of water in low lying areas. This has
particularly impacted the area downstream of the confluence of the
chena and Tanana rivers.

Water levels on the Tanana are expected to rise through Monday and
remain high into next week.

The rising groundwater may make some roads and driveways in the
Rosie Creek Subdivision impassable. Some areas impacted include:
Rosie creek... Melanie ln... baurick CT... Perkins drive and
frustration trail.

1256 PM akdt Fri Jul 22 2016

... The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 245 PM akdt Sunday for
the chena river from the Moose Creek dam upstream...

From 1 to 2 inches of rain has fallen over portions of the chena
river basin since Thursday morning. Additional rainfall amounts
below 0.25 inch are expected through Sunday afternoon. The chena
river remains bankfull and above flood stage in some locations due
to the heavy rain that fell earlier this week.

As of 1 PM Friday afternoon... river levels on the chena river at the
Granite tors campground have begun to slowly fall with a crest
recorded earlier this morning at 20.8 feet. This crest will continue
downriver into the weekend. At the Moose Creek dam... the water level
remains above minor flood stage at 24.9 feet and is expected to
remain at that level through the weekend. Water has inundated many
of the river access roads in the chena river Recreation Area... the
Stiles creek shooting range... and the compeau trailhead.

In the Steamboat Landing subdivision in North Pole... water levels
are expected to remain at minor flood stage into the weekend.
Several inches of water will continue to cross Freeman Road... river
water will inundate some yards in the subdivision... and groundwater
flooding will occur in some basements.

The U.S. Army corps of engineers Alaska district is currently
operating the Moose Creek dam. Flood control gates at the dam
started regulating the chena river at 6:00 PM on 20 July 2016. The
dam will be regulating the chena river so that flow does not exceed
12000 cubic feet per second in downtown Fairbanks. Groundwater will
rise to near the ground surface for several thousand feet west of
the Moose Creek dam with minor flooding possible. River navigation
through the Moose Creek dam is unavailable during operations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

Special Statement
Issued: 2:56 PM AKDT Jul. 22, 2016 – National Weather Service

..high water on rivers in the central interior will continue
through the weekend...

High water levels are continuing on many rivers in the
central interior. This includes the chena... little chena...
Salcha... and Tanana rivers. Heavy rains earlier this week followed
by an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain since Thursday morning
will keep the rivers at high levels through the weekend. In
addition to the high water levels... there is increased debris on
area rivers. Shoreline erosion may occur in some areas.

On the chena river in Fairbanks... some paths near the river
are inundated and there is limited clearance for boat traffic
under some bridges in the Fairbanks area. The U.S. Army corps of
engineers is currently operating the Moose Creek to regulate the
amount of the flow on the chena river through Fairbanks. The chena
river in Fairbanks will remain near its current level while the
flow is being controlled.

Minor flooding is occurring along the river upstream from the
Moose Creek dam. Please refer to the Flood Advisory statement for
additional information.
