Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 1:38 PM AKDT Jul. 26, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
rain and melting snow
along the Kennicott river at McCarthy...

* until 145 PM akdt Thursday

* a Glacier-dammed lake in the mountains above McCarthy is
releasing. Trained observers report the water continues to rise
rapidly on the Kennicott river at McCarthy. Increased erosion is
now occurring at the parking lot near the bridge and near the
campground. At 115 PM akdt the river gage was at 25.89... a rise of
about 3 feet in the last 6 hours. Flood stage is 28 ft and may be
reached by this evening. It is not known exactly how much water
was in the lake prior to release and how much remains in the lake
at this time. Minor flooding... impacting primarily the
campground... is the most likely impact from this event.
However... there is potential for additional rises over the next 24-
36 hours that may require an upgrade of this Flood Advisory.
Please stay tuned to local media outlets for latest information or
visit www.Weather.Gov/Anchorage or www.Weather.Gov/aprfc for the
latest information.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Advisory means river levels are elevated... or ponding of
water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes.
It takes only a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles
away.
