Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:35 AM PDT Mar. 30, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect from Saturday
afternoon through Sunday morning...

* timing... the sneaker waves threat will increase Saturday
afternoon and Saturday evening and continue into early Sunday
morning as a long period west swell impacts the coast.

* Locations include... all beaches along the Curry, Coos and
Douglas coasts.

* Potential impacts... large sneaker waves can arrive suddenly
and push water very far up the beach, and may sweep people off
their feet and into the ocean. These waves can also lift and
move logs and debris, which can crush or injure those caught
in the water. Use extra caution at area beaches during this
time period and never turn your back to the ocean.

* View the hazard area in detail at

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution
should be used when in or near the water. Sneaker waves can
arrive suddenly and push much farther up the beach than previous
waves, resulting in dangerous conditions even when the ocean does
not appear threatening.
